CACIN

If we continue northwards along the route defined by the reservoir of Bermejales, we enter the territories of Cacín. The village is situated on a plain on the right bank of the river Cacín, which flows into the pantano de los Bermejales. This tributary of the Genil is the second most important in the Poniente Granadino. Travellers can approach the village via the regional road of Moraleda de Zafayona.

HISTORY

Cacín is architecturally modern, but still has a special atmosphere. At the end of the last century it was government property, but was bought in 1836 by the large landholder and liberal from Alhama, Juan de Toledo y Muñoz.

NATURAL HERITAGE

The most interesting geographical feature in this area are the “Tajos del río Cacin” to the south of the village. These are steep cliffs which are beginning to disappear as further northwards the river courses its way through a valley of a lower gradient.
The ecosystem of the surrounding area offers great floral diversity: rosemary, thyme, hom oak, broom, pine trees and gorse being among the most common species. Impressive views of river Cacín can be gained from the bridge which bears the same name. Visitors can get to this spot by taking the approach road to Cacín from Ventas de Alhama. We come across the bridge as we enter the village form the same road as several paths, the majority of which are in good condition, branch off. These paths are suitable for trekking, horse-riding, mountain cycling and 4X4 adventure. Fishermen will find river Cacín well stocked with barbell and trout.

MONUMENTAL HERITAGE

St. Sebastian´s Church:

This church is situated in the “Paseo de la Iglesia”, is of recent construction and has a toser which is in consonance with the architecture of surrounding buildings.

GASTRONOMY

Sausages and other pork products
Fried breadcrumbs with lard and bacon
Gazpacho.

FESTIVALS

End of July/beginning of August, festival of patron, Saint Sebastian. On this day almost everbody in the village goes on a picnic.
Mid August, El Turro celebrates its traditional patronal festivities in honour of Nuestra Señora del Rosario.
